Coloursmith Labs is a company that develops and manufactures light filtering dyes for use in optical devices, such as contact lenses, spectacle lenses and intraocular lenses.
The company was founded in 2018 by Gabrielle Masone, a Dalhousie University Department of Chemistry Graduate and long-time vision care advocate. At a young age, Masone lost functional vision in one of her eyes due to a preventable condition. This personal experience pushed Masone to fight for better vision care and education, from petitioning the United States Congress to running her university’s Vision Club.
After graduating from Dalhousie, Masone decided to marry her passion for vision care and chemistry together to create a company dedicated to creating products which improve the state of global vision health.
Alongside the development of a filter which mitigates the effects of colour vision deficiency, Coloursmith has also developed a filter which can effectively filter the harmful wavelengths of blue light, while at the same time maintaining its beneficial wavelengths, all with minimal tinting. Many other applications have been identified for the technology, including tint-free migraine prevention, colour enhancement and fading protection in sunglasses.
Since its founding in 2018, Coloursmith Labs has filed its first patent, raised a pre-seed round of over 600 thousand dollars and opened its first laboratory in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The company is poised for growth, industry partnerships and incorporation into the global contact lens supply chain.
